White supremacists ‘Charlottesville Rally Ends in Violence, Alt-Right Vows to Return

In Charlottesville on Saturday, after the city council and Virginia governor declare a state of emergency and police disband the Unite the Right rally organized by white supremacists, I am following a growing group of demonstrators against the rally, who have begun marching east down Water Street, the southern perimeter of the city’s historic downtown mall. Just a few blocks from Emancipation Park, where the white supremacist rally had been scheduled, the marchers appear nonviolent but raucous, chanting, “Whose streets? Our streets!” and holding signs like, “Nazi carpetbaggers go home.”

Jay Z , produced the docuseries Time: The Kalief Browder Story

Jay Z criticized the “exploitative” bail bond industry and “predatory lending schemes” aimed at the African-American community in a Father’s Day essay.

“If you’re from neighborhoods like the Brooklyn one I grew up in, if you’re unable to afford a private attorney, then you can be disappeared into our jail system simply because you can’t afford bail,” the rapper wrote for Time.

“Millions of people are separated from their families for months at a time — not because they are convicted of committing a crime, but because they are accused of committing a crime.”

Jay Z, who produced the docuseries Time: The Kalief Browder Story, writes that he “became obsessed with the injustice of the profitable bail bond industry” while researching Browder’s story.

“Kalief’s family was too poor to post bond when he was accused of stealing a backpack,” he wrote. “He was sentenced to a kind of purgatory before he ever went to trial. The three years he spent in solitary confinement on Rikers ultimately created irreversible damage that lead to his death at 22.”

The rapper recently applauded New York mayor Bill de Blasio’s plan to shutter the Rikers Island prison facility.

Inspired by Southerners on New Ground and Color of Change‘s Mother’s Day efforts to bail out 100 incarcerated mothers, Jay Z is supporting similar efforts for those organizations “to bail out fathers who can’t afford the due process our democracy promises.”

“This pre-incarceration conundrum is devastating to families. One in nine black children has an incarcerated parent. Families are forced to take on more debt, often in predatory lending schemes created by bail bond insurers,” the rapper continued.

“Every year $9 billion dollars are wasted incarcerating people who’ve not been convicted of a crime, and insurance companies, who have taken over our bail system, go to the bank.” Read full story @ Rollingstone.com

A day after an unreleased Prince song titled “Deliverance” unexpectedly appeared on streaming services alongside news of an upcoming EP, the Prince estate has filed a federal lawsuit against the EP’s co-producer Ian Boxill. In the lawsuit, filed by Paisley Park Enterprises on Tuesday, the estate alleges that Boxill is packaging “Deliverance” and five other unpublished recordings featuring Prince without their permission. Singer-Songwriter gnash on How He Was Clueless That His Song ‘i hate u, i love u’ Would Be a Hit

gnash sits on a porch after landing in Delaware for Firefly. The airline lost his luggage, which means he’s stuck with the clothing on his body. gnash the optimist just sees this as a squad marketing opportunity.

“We got our merch with us — I was gonna say we might put a bunch of merch on us,” he proposes. “I feel like it’s a good squad move, like if Drake has everybody in the OVO stuff then maybe everybody should do gnash.”

gnash has managed to sneak up on the Hot 100 charts with his hit “i hate u, i love u” featuring Olivia O’Brien. The bare piano-driven conflict stands out in a sea of club-ready summer songs like “One Dance” and “Don’t Let Me Down.” With a quintessentially millennial social-media presence, the singer-songwriter has created a strong fanbase of Dreamers who relate to his straight-from-a-diary lyrics and #positive tweets.

Lady Gaga Announces New Album Featuring Father John Misty, Josh Homme, Beck

Lady Gaga’s new single “Perfect Illusion” was met with a lukewarm response when it dropped this past Friday. But Mother Monster only moves forward. The destination this time is Joanne, her first album since 2013’s ARTPOP. Lady Gaga announced on Zane Lowe’s Beats 1 show that the new LP will drop on October 21 via Streamline/Interscope.ladygaga-640x427

The pop star, born Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, explained that the album is named after her late aunt, who died from lupus when she was 19. (Aside from being Gaga’s middle name, Joanne is also part of the name of a Manhattan restaurant owned by her parents, Joanne Trattoria.)

“It’s everything about Joanne,” she told Lowe, discussing the album and its title. “It’s all the toughness of the pain of losing her that made us all strong and made us who we are.”

As Pitchfork notes, Joanne will be assisted by the musicianship of Queens of the Stone Age’s Josh Homme, Father John Misty, Beck, Florence Welch, and Mark Ronson (who had a hand in producing “Perfect Illusion). Aside from “Perfect Illusion,” other song titles include “John Wayne,” “Sinner’s Prayer,” and “Ayo.” Does all of this amount to a good album? The world awaits.

Nearly three years ago, Kanye West shuttled Miley Cyrus from her now infamous appearance at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards to a recording studio, where the two reportedly crafted a remix to West’s booming Yeezus cut “Black Skinhead.” The rumored collaboration never saw the proper light of day at the time, but late last night, someone — an angel? A disgruntled G.O.O.D Music employee? North West? — leaked it to the world.

Cyrus herself opens the track with a sung verse before dipping into a brief bit of Tears For Fears’ “Everybody Wants to Rule the World.” The rest of the song strips back the dark, oozing Yeezus aesthetic in favor of glitchier, more pop-minded accompaniment. Tinny 808s and Travi$ Scott guide the track along a weirdly melodic path — odd only considering how thrashing and unforgiving the original is. It is, without a doubt, one of the most interesting mainstream musical collaborations of the decade. Hear it right here.

Miguel Just Released a Song He Recorded When He Was 14

Late last night, Heavy Rotation Magazine cover recording artist Miguel— who released his acclaimed album WILDHEART earlier this year — threw a song up on Soundcloud called “U R on My Mind,” a track he claims was recorded in the fall of 1999 when he was 14. It’s kind of incredible to be able to trace the roots of the singer’s silky vocals back to his early days — his phrasing’s obviously not quite as nuanced as it is now, but the foundation’s absolutely there. Listen below.

Jack White and Q-Tip Bring the Blues to A Tribe Called Quest’s ‘Excursions’ in New York

Run the Jewels also brought out Zach De La Rocha during their opening set at Madison Square Garden

As if a sold out show at Madison Square Garden with Run the Jewels opening wasn’t enough to make Jack White’s Friday night tour stop in New York a little out of the ordinary, he also had another big trick up his sleeve in the form of A Tribe Called Quest’s Q-Tip. In the midst of his performance of the Lazaretto standout “The Black Bat Licorice,” the legendary rapper came out on stage to finish out the track before launching into a bluesy full-band rendition of the Tribe’s own Low End Theory track “Excursions.”jack White w Q-Tip

Not to be outdone by the headlining act, Run the Jewels had a guest rapper of their own earlier in the evening, enlisting Zach De La Rocha of Rage Against the Machine to perform on the Run the Jewels 2 cut “Close Your Eyes (and Count to Fuck).” You can catch that performance below, and the Q-Tip/Jack White performance up above.

Hear RZA & Tinashe’s ‘One Of A Kind’ Collaboration

An exclusive listen to the pair’s Hollywood studios recording session RZA & Tinashe

Inside the Dr Pepper Studio, which is located at one of the premiere studios in Hollywood, The RZA welcomes Tinashe to what has become his production lab for the night. After spending a short time getting to know each other, they jump into recording the track that will be a part of RZA’s upcoming collaborative EP. RZA begins by playing a few beats to feel out Tinashe’s sound until they decide on a song that is a bit more mellow compared to RZA’s others. After a couple of passes, Tinashe jumps on the control room mic and begins humming to the beat. She passes through impressive vocal highs and lows to carve out a melody while RZA adds to the beat with his Yahama Motif XS. Shortly thereafter, Tinashe is listening back to the recorded scratch-track of her humming and penning her lyrics. It’s not long until she’s out in the vocal booth laying down her final take. The fast-rising Tinashe impressed RZA with her vocal range and expeditiousness in the studio in what was a notably smooth collaboration. Hear the results and read the pair’s thoughts below:

Pitbull, Ke$ha Take Top’s The Charts

After a four-week wait at No. 2, Pitbull and Ke$ha climb to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 with “Timber.” The new leader had held at the runner-up spot while Eminem and featured artist Rihanna reigned for four frames with “The Monster,” which this week slips to No. 3. Meanwhile, Katy Perry charges into the top 10 with “Dark Horse,” featuring Juicy J. As we do each Wednesday, let’s dig deeper into the numbers behind the Hot 100’s top 10. With the coronation of “Timber,” Pitbull collects his second Hot 100 No. 1. “Give Me Everything,” featuring Ne-Yo, Afrojack and Nayer, topped the July 9, 2011, ranking. Ke$ha claims her third Hot 100 No. 1; her debut single “TiK ToK” ruled for nine weeks in 2010, while “We R Who We R” crowned the Nov. 13, 2010, tally.kesha-pitbull-amas “Timber” spends a fourth week atop the Digital Songs chart, with 301,000 downloads sold (down 32%), according to Nielsen SoundScan. As previously reported, only three songs on the 50-position Digital Songs chart sport an increase in sales over the prior week, following last week’s hefty sales week following Christmas. The week after Christmas normally brings a surge in digital song sales, thanks to the redemption of newly-acquired digital gift cards. (Total song sales for the week ending Jan. 5 were down by 29%; in the previous week, they soared by 98%.) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hHUbLv4ThOo&feature=player_embedded#!

The Top 10 Producers in Music

Thanks to his international smash hit, and six-week Billboard Hot 100 chart-topper “Thrift Shop,” Ryan Lewis, 25, has newfound knowledge of and appreciation for thrifting culture around the world. Wherever Lewis and Macklemore, the rapper and his key collaborator, travel in support of their platinum debut album, The Heist, fans unfailingly regale the Seattle duo with tales of their own adventures in second-hand clothes shopping—a pastime with unexpectedly universal appeal. “We thought it was a fun, kind of weird, pretty catchy song that would do really well among a small pocket of people that liked thrift shops—almost like a cult audience,” Lewis says. “And then the next thing you know you’re on the other side of the world and it’s playing out of bars and taxis. It’s still kind of jaw-dropping to me.”mike-will-made-it-miley-cyrus-vmas-2013-650-430 “Thrift Shop,” a song with a playfully irrepressible saxophone loop and lyrics extolling the virtues of a good bargain, catapulted Macklemore and Lewis to pop-star status, a quantum leap from the indie-rap circles in which they were used to traveling. To date, the video for the song has racked up more than 425 million views on YouTube, helping drive it to platinum status seven times over and a comfortable position as the biggest-selling song of the year. A lightning-in-a-bottle hit like “Thrift Shop” is any producer’s dream, but Lewis stands apart in 2013 for his work on two subsequent singles that rode similar waves to cultural ubiquity. “Can’t Hold Us,” a foot-stomping, piano-filled party anthem with a soulful hook courtesy of Ray Dalton, also reached No. 1 on the Hot 100 this year, making Macklemore and Lewis the first duo in the chart’s history to crack the top spot with both of its first two singles. Third single “Same Love,” featuring Mary Lambert, was an anthem of a different kind. The poignant and personal ballad became an unofficial song of the gay rights movement due to its stance against homophobia. First released in July 2012, the song climbed to No. 11 on the Hot 100 this year—a position it held for four nonconsecutive weeks—in a surge of popularity following the Supreme Court’s landmark decision in June to overturn the Defense of Marriage Act 1. Full of talent, they are in that rare position of being respected by the kind of hip-hop fans who like to lament about “a golden era”, and won’t disappoint them by selling out. They are responsible for a delightful discography including Black Lip Bastard Constipation and Shadow of Death. Defining moment: Part of parent label Top Dawg entertainment or TDE, which earlier in the year broke the internet (or at least the hip-hop section) by releasing something every day for a week. Key track: Lamar’s Section 80 mixtape catapulted the group on to the radar of the hip-hop elite, thanks to single HiiPower. It’s all said and done and Berg is ready to put it all behind him and move forward to the next chapter; making great music with and for his new YFM family of artists and producers. “I felt like it was time for my side of  the stories….I know the industry & the public don’t look to my music 4 depth necessarily.  This was a opportunity 2 speak on alot of the questions people may or may not have but on a platform I’m comfortable with. Never in a million years would I go 2 the studio and say I’m looking 4 this kinda beat 2 vent on, I would never but the truth of the matter is everything happened organically! Big Boi caused quite a stir in New Zealand last week after noticing racially-insensitive dolls for sale at a shop in Auckland Airport. Big Boi posted a photo of the toys—referred to as golliwogs—on his Twitter page last Thursday (August 25), that left many people in anger. “Ok, all blacks is a rugby team, but what the ****are these,” he wrote before showing the image to his followers. “Throw them in the bin with the person selling them,” one person tweeted back in response. “Burn the racist airport down,” another comment read. Following the OutKast rapper’s statements, local paper, the New Zealand Herald contacted Airport management, who had the dolls removed. “Once we were made aware, the retailer was immediately asked to remove the product from sale,” said Airport Corporate Relations Manager, Richard Llewellyn. “Once we were made aware, the retailer was immediately asked to remove the product from sale,” said Airport Corporate Relations Manager, Richard Llewellyn.   Llewellyn stated that although he didn’t get to speak to the Atlanta-bred rap star it was understood by the store staff that the dolls could be viewed as insulting. “In this case we acknowledge that this is a product widely regarded as inappropriate,” Llewellyn said, “We apologize for any offence caused as a result of this product being on sale at the airport.”Golliwogs were first introduced in the 1940s in children’s books by author, Florence Kate Upton, as a sort of caricature of an American Black minstrel figure. However, by the 1960s they began being associated with the insulting racial slur “wog,” and the books, deemed “racially insensitive,” were eventually withdrawn from libraries. Yet in some countries the dolls can still be found, as evident in this case. Although shocked by the incident, Big Boi tweeted that he didn’t have any hard feelings towards the country.     Houston’s Mayor Proclaims “Bun B Day”

He’s volunteered his time and also teaches a course on religion and Hip-Hop at Rice University. Bun is one half of the iconic rap group UGK with the late Pimp C and he has had great success as solo artist as well. Incidentally, he is a native of Port Arthur, Texas. Bun B Day will take place at Houston’s City Hall Tuesday August 30 at 1:30 pm.  The meeting is open to the public.

Jadakiss Doesn’t Want to be Involved in Lil Wayne/Jay-Z Beef, Birdman Does

The Internets went ablaze yesterday (August 24) over the premature leak of Lil Wayne’s long-awaited album, Tha Carter IV, and more specifically, over “It’s Good,” Weezy’s song with Jadakiss and Drake, where he takes shots at Jay-Z. In fact, following the song’s proliferation over the web on Wednesday, five out of 10 trending topics on Twitter nationwide were Wayne related. As previously reported, on the song, Wayne seems to be responding to Jay’s subliminal jabs towards Cash Money co-founder and Weezy’s step father, Bryan “Baby” Williams on the Watch the Thronebonus cut, “H*A*M.” “I’m like really half a billi, nigga/Really you got baby money/Keep it real with niggas/Niggas ain’t got my lady money,” Jay rapped. Firing back on “It’s Good,” the New Orleans native spit: “Talkin’ ’bout baby money, I got your baby money/Kidnap your bitch, get that ‘How much you love your lady?’ money.” Quickly following the track’s leak, Birdman took to Twitter to continue the feud. “YMCMB.I got ur BABY MONEY$$$$$,” he typed. “We Tha Busine$$.#dont Lie (sic). BMJR. Tha Besteva. Watch us Ball (sic).” Jadakiss, on the other hand, took to the social networking site to express that he had no idea that Wayne would be dissing Jay on the song and that he wants no part of any beef. “Yall hating ass cocksuckers better chill,” he wrote, “they only sent me a track wit NO verses and I recorded that verse 3 months ago! #leavemeoutofit (sic)” “When I DISS niggas or have a problem Wit ANY RAPPER I SAY THere NAMES without hesitation and YALL know this already (sic),” he continued.

DamFoolz – New Money in H-Town

Interviewed by Heavy Rotation Magazine   How did you guys form the group “Damfoolz” & what section of Houston are you guys from? (HRM ) The group was originally just us being friends in high school.  We was always joking and doing a lot of crazy shit so we called ourselves the DamFoolz.  We also all liked rap music a lot.  It wasn’t until years later, though, that we formed a rap group together.  It started with Great Scott, King Tutt, and Antho Rags, but a five year stint in prison for Antho put the formal group on hiatus.  Shortly after Antho was released another one of our Damfoolz friends from high school, Big Mitch, also returned from a seven year bid with aspirations of rapping.  The group was at that point made complete.  The Damfoolz all hail from the south side of Houston. Being that you are a new group , what are you doing too promote yourself to your fan base? (HRM) Just a lot of footwork.  Relying on word of mouth and using the internet to the fullest.  The way the industry is these days they ain’t really trying to fuck wit nobody that ain’t grindin or that don’t have some kinda buzz no matter how good the music is.  So we just do our best to make our faces seen in the city and keep a presence on the net.  We keep hard copies of our product on hand at all times to have something to present to people we meet, but the best way to get or music is via the net.  It’s easier to reach the masses and it cuts out the production cost cuz it’s free.  Also we do shows to raise awareness of this DamFoolery. In a few words , what is the best way to describe your music and your sound?(HRM) Good.  It’s real versatile and lyrical but by the time you finish listening to our music we feel like you gone know that these dudes can really rap and they know how to make music.  Good music. In todays musical climate being very competitive , what will you guys do to compete with the millions of new rap groups in the music industry? Have a swag and a brand.  At first we didn’t know whether the name Damfoolz would do more harm than good because of just the negative connotation of calling ourselves “fools”, but people have really been latching on to that name and we’re starting to see a following emerge.  It was a move that we felt might be kind of risky but would pay off big if executed right and that’s what happened.  Now everybody wants to be a Damfool.  Could you blame em? Being from Houston ,Texas who are some of your favorite artist that you look to for inspiration?(HRM) For inspiration I think you have to go back to the old heads.  We were fortunate enough to be able to be around HAWK before he passed.  In Houston to be able to work with an original member of the S.U.C. is as good as it gets.  That’s like being in the NBA and playing with Michael Jordan.  So I would definitely say him and anybody else that came from the bottom and made something happen with this music.  Cuz at the end of the day the pattern we’re most trying to follow is the grindind and work ethic of other individuals.  We feel like we already got our own voice musically.     by Tony Patterson (Tigga Pat) of Heavy Rotation Magazine
